Turning 50 is a milestone, and for me, there was no better way to honor this chapter than to embark on a solo journey to Bali—a place steeped in spirituality, beauty, and vibrant energy. This trip was more than a vacation; it was a deep dive into self-discovery, healing, and the profound wisdom of another culture.
I’ve never been so excited to celebrate a birthday, and not because of where I celebrated. The entirety of 2024 was rich in lessons, working through a lifetime of baggage, traumas, and limiting beliefs. This trip felt like the culmination of all that inner work—a chance to honor the journey and step forward with renewed clarity and purpose.
A Week at the Goddess Retreat
My journey began in Seminyak at the Goddess Retreat, a sanctuary for the soul. Surrounded by like-minded women, I felt an immediate sense of belonging. Days were filled with yoga sessions that quieted my mind, nourishing meals that healed my body, and heartfelt conversations that fed my spirit. The retreat created space for me to let go of old patterns and welcome a renewed sense of purpose.
Exploring Ubud, Canggu, and Beyond
From there, I ventured to Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, where lush rice terraces and ancient temples radiate a serene energy. Even in the pouring rain, Bali’s beauty was undeniable. I took part in a traditional Balinese ceremony at Tirta Empul, immersing myself in the sacred waters for purification. This ritual was a powerful reminder of the healing power of nature and the importance of honoring tradition.
While in Ubud, I also attended a fascinating workshop at the Ubud Botany Interactive where we learned about Balinese healing plants and created various skin and hair care products using traditional tools and ingredients. This hands-on experience deepened my appreciation for the island’s rich connection to nature and its wisdom.
Canggu offered a more laid-back vibe with its surf culture and stunning beaches. At Seseh Beach, even though sunsets were elusive due to the rain, the atmosphere was magical in its own way. Visiting Tanah Lot, a temple perched on a rocky outcrop surrounded by the sea, was nothing short of enchanting. The waves crashing around the temple seemed to echo the resilience and faith of the Balinese people.
Healing and Energy Work
One of the most transformative aspects of my trip was meeting with Balinese healers and energy workers. These experiences were deeply personal and profoundly healing. Their intuitive wisdom and connection to the unseen realms left me in awe. They helped me peel back layers of emotional weight I didn’t even realize I was carrying.
Lessons from Bali
Bali has a way of holding up a mirror to your life. It made me reflect deeply on the way we live in North America—our fast-paced lifestyles, the disconnect from nature, and the often exploitative systems we participate in. The Balinese way of life, rooted in community, mindfulness, and a harmonious relationship with nature, left me yearning for change.
This trip reignited my passion for travel and cultural exploration, and it amplified my commitment to living more intentionally. I’ve come home inspired to integrate what I’ve learned: to slow down, to honor the natural rhythms of life, and to approach each day with more patience and gratitude.
An Invitation to Reflect
What about you? What are some aspects of your life you’d like to change? Are there places you’ve dreamed of visiting or skills you’ve longed to learn? Maybe it’s as simple as spending more time in nature or reconnecting with a passion you’ve set aside. Whatever it is, I encourage you to take that first step. Life is too precious to live on autopilot.
Bali reminded me that the journey inward is just as important as the journey outward. And sometimes, all it takes is a single trip to change your perspective and set your soul on fire.
